Beginner Piano Guide?

Posted by admin

What would be a good piano book you would recommend for someone who likes to play piano on occasion but is looking to start seriously playing? Any help would be greatly appreciated, thanks!

I have a book called "First Steps in Music Theory.. Grades 1 to 5.. Eric Taylor" Accredited and used by "The Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music".

I have obtained my certificates by studying their books. But I found all of the theory books, without the exercises, combined in this one book. Awesome guide, teaches you EVERYTHING you want to know about music theory. And they also have books for piano learning.

Good luck, piano is an awesome and maginificent instrument <3

What are the criteria of a good piano keyboard for a beginner?

Posted by admin

i want to buy a piano keyboard (although i don't know how to play, im planning to learn). How should i choose the keyboard? and what about the price? in what range?

If you know you will stick with the piano then fork out a few hundred pounds for a decent looking one.
Or if you are not sure then buy a £60-150 synthesizer that sounds like a piano. Because you got all the cool demos and voices.
But for a serious pianist you need one with a music stand (which most come with), at least a sustain pedal (or one that you can add a pedal to later if needed), and weighted keys. Which may be difficult at the start but I had one with weighted keys and because I was used to that my technique was all wrong and it was difficult for me to correct.
So -
Piano-sounding (not electric)
64+ keys if you plan to stick with it
Weighted keys
Sustain pedal compatible
Nice looking
Music stand

If you go to a music store then they will recommend you one.

What kind of piano/keyboard is best for a beginner who wants to learn, but still keeping the piano sound?

Posted by admin

I want to learn how to play the piano. I live in a small apartment so I don’t have room for anything large. I’m also not rich so I want to look for something that is fairly inexpensive but will still keep the same features as a regular piano. I’m looking for something electrical, so it’s smaller and hopefully with a headphone jack.

I have a Chickering console on a 4′x6′ area rug, which basically means it takes up the same amount of room as a full-sized keyboard, and I live in an apartment too, and even teach from there. You can get a used piano at a moving or estate sale (or even sometimes a thrift shop) and they will hold their resale value far better than keyboards.

If you have good relationships with your neighbours in your apartment you can work out reasonable times to practice, and there are ways to soften the sound that won’t damage the piano and still allow you to practice.

What method books to use for a beginner adult piano player?

Posted by admin

I have an adult who wants to learn to play the piano. He has no previous musical experience, hence I will have to teach him the basics, ie. start by teaching him notes and note values before he can actually begin with his lessons.

What books should I use to:
1) Teach him notes and note values
2) Actually teach him to play the piano

I’ve heard that the Thompson books are excellent, yet I would like some feedback to decide on the best method books. Thanks.

Tell him to get a real piano teacher with experience and/or a degree or two! They know the latest and best books to use. You would not want someone with just a first aid certificate to operate on you would you

What's a good beginner piano series geared for young adults?

Posted by admin

I'm about to teach a 19 year old piano. She's brand new. All the book series I've found so far are all geared for young children. Does anyone know of any books that are written and constructed for an older students? Thanks!

How to play the Piano – A step by step guide by Nick French.
- Its good to learn from, and not geared towards young children.
