What are good songs for the beginner classical piano repertoire?
Posted by admin
Right now I'm learning Bach's Prelude in C Major, which is beautiful and satisfying to play as well as fairly painless to learn. I've been playing for about two months (after 10 years on guitar), I have a solid understanding of basics and want to start building skill on the keyboard. What are some other classical staples that aren't incredibly intimidating?
Beethoven G Minor Sonata and/or Mozart Fantasy in D Minor would be good follow ups to that piece.

I think the Chopin preludes are beautiful and fairly easy.

If you like Bach's prelude in C major, I'd recommend Beethoven's Moonlight sonata movement 1.
Beautiful piece, and although I find it easy, it's by far my favourite to play, and is similar to Bach's prelude in the way it works (in my opinion).
Lovely playing by Wilhelm Kempff here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O6txOvK-mAk

There are many graded lists of repertoire for every instrument and voice. Even many publishers rank works by difficulty in their catalogs and websites. Hinson has a good piano repertoire book. I am also a competition judge in NY, and the NYSSMA Manual has graded lists – in whatever state you live, a school music teacher should be able to steer you towards their own listings.
Even if you peruse college course content online, they will often list the material to be covered in each level of instruction, which will give you and idea of the progression of difficulty. Of course, *difficulty* does not always means heaps of notes – it can mean the sbilty to carry a line in a slow and sustained work that LOOKS easy on the page – hah! Much luck to you in your musical progress.

A song is a piece of music for voice (accompanied or unaccompanied) it is not a piece for solo piano. I recommend that you take a look at the Clementi Sonatinas. They will prepare you for Mozart and Beethoven.

I would strongly advise you to get a suitably qualified teacher and let him or her select pieces. At this critical stage it is so easy for you to pick up many bad habits which will slow your progress and be very hard to unlearn.
Good luck and Happy New Year!
